When most people think of house music, they don't really think of an underground movement, nor do they think of it as particularly rare. On face value, people mostly assume that house music is everywhere in the Big Apple. After all, it's house music. It's supposed to be somewhat ubiquitous, right?
As one of the biggest umbrella genres of electronica music, house is basically thought of as a staple in nightclubs around the world. And, in places like Europe and Chicago, it still is. However, according to at least one New York City DJ, the world of New York City house has actually become an underground one. "If you actually go looking for events that focus on house and nothing but house," says Premo, "you're going to find that it's a lot harder to find than you'd initially think. I have no problem saying that I believe that house is actually pretty underground here - even though it's a well-known umbrella genre. After all, you really don't see house DJ's performing at major music festivals like you would dubstep DJ's or EDM artists. You also don't really hear about many house DJ's on the radio, either. So, even if you do have house at major venues like Pacha, it's still not really that mainstream here in the US."
DJ Premo is definitely one of the few house DJs who can tell you a true-to-life history of the house music scene. Having been a DJ for over 15 years, he has seen every trend come and go, and he has also seen house music make a resurgence in the boroughs a number of times.

Most recently, both Manhattan and Brooklyn have seen an increase in house music events. Brooklyn, of course, tends to hold the more underground events, while Manhattan tends to work with events that are more mainstream and pop-oriented.

When asked what trends he's noticed in recent years, Premo was more than happy to answer.

"One of the things that I have noticed lately is that deep house has been making a huge impact on listeners these days. It's a much more aggressive form than the soulful, old-school kind of house that you initially saw coming out of Chicago a couple of years back," said Premo. "As a resident DJ of Pacha, I love seeing peoples' reactions when I add a little deep house to a mix. They always seem to like it, and people always end up dancing to it."

As with many of the other electronica genres, DJs in the house music scene are hoping that the EDM boom that has been taking over both radio airwaves and club dancefloors will be a gateway for both new and old genres to find new fans. After all, once EDM's popularity becomes old hat, many of those listeners will likely want to explore other musical genres that have similar beats and similar vibes.

There is definitely similar appeal between certain genres of house and EDM. Both major genres are known for strong kicks and uplifting melodies. Many house musicians love to sing about positive themes in life, which is a very notable aspect of many EDM subgenres. Obviously, house music isn't known for attracting kandi-wearing, rainbow-clad dance fiends, but that may change depending on the kinds of people who will discover the genre in future years.

When asked whether or not house will see another boom in popularity, Premo's answer was as direct as it could be:

"It might be underground in the States right now, but its next rise in popularity is definitely a matter of 'when' - not if."

Kapri Styles is a truly unique star. Her performances are unparalleled in sensuality and intensity, making her a hot commodity in the adult industry.

These photos were taken during the summer of 2013, in the Financial Dtistrict. They remind me of Cuneiform writings, some of the "wedges" date back as far as 1974.

The photos were captured with an Apple iPhone 4S utilizing the Panorama option. I took the liberty of dividing the photos from the original panorama.

An exposed wall sat at the intersection of broad and south streets, in front of the New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Not quite sure what it was doing there, or of it's existence today. All I know is, that wall serves as a living piece of NYC history, and the golden years prior to contemporary "Mainstream Graffiti".

Hep Cats And Swingin' Bachelors - Are We Seeing A Return Of Swinging And Swapping?

by: Ossiana Tepfenhart

The sexual revolution of the 1960's and 1970's was not only limited to women declaring their freedom from unfair laws. Nope, it was a time of sexploration for singles, couples, trios and quads. After all, they didn’t call singles' apartments "Swingin Bachelor Pads" for nothing. During this time, many awesome kinds of swinger party games were invented. For example, both key parties and naked Twister became popular pastimes around this time. Swinging, streaking, and just about every other group nude activity became de rigeur, and a truly successful bachelor was one that swings. Then, sometime around the 1980's, possibly due to the increase in cocaine use, the spread of HIV, or due to the fact that one too many little tykes were conceived at such parties, swinging decreased in popularity. To a point, this is to be expected. Society has this weird way of being cyclical in values, and when there are major health concerns at stake, things tend to go out of style faster than MC Hammer's parachute pants.
So, for a while, swingers were basically a group of people who were still living out the 60's and 70's spirits amongst themselves. The problem, of course, is that it seemed as if the vast majority of them had actually lived in the 60's.
Up until recently, almost every major city in the US saw swinging and partner swapping as an activity that was more focused on the 40+ age crowd, and if there's one thing that TV (and everything else) has taught us, it's that things that our parents do aren't cool by default. Besides, there is something seriously awkward and traumatizing about the potential of running into a parent at a swinger party.
Times are a changin, though.
NYC has recently seen a large burst in swinger parties that all have one thing in common - they cater to the young, hot, and hip of the city. More often than not, these upscale parties actually have couples apply to get in, with strict rules about age limits, height-weight proportion, and admittance of single males. Those who do not make the cut do not get to know the location, or are just barred entry.
While most sex clubs and parties have more secretive locations, there are a couple of more mainstream clubs which have begun to crop up and actually advertise their entry. A good example of a swinger/sex club making waves among the younger crowd in the Big Apple is Bowery Bliss, located in the notoriously trendy Lower East Side. Even so, the buildings that are known as swingers' clubs are generally nondescript.
Unlike the often frugal parties of the 60's and 70's, New York's younger swinger scene is not exactly easy on the wallet. Typically, a trendy swinger's club in the city will run individuals anywhere from $40 a night for couples to upwards of $100 for a single person - all depending on location, who's attending, the night that the party is being hosted, and other similar factors. In some cases, dance parties which have a VIP room reserved for sex may be a cheaper alternative.
The problem with many singles and couples who attend swinger parties for the first time...or even the tenth time. Here are some of the problems that people have noted when going to swinger clubs and parties that are geared towards younger groups.
- A lot of the time, you can't really figure out how to act. While there are guides online that offer etiquette tips for swingers' clubs, actually going to a club is a wholly different thing from just reading about it. It's easy to get a overwhelmed by the nudity, the sex, and the fact that you sometimes can't help but stare.
- Even with the strictest of guidelines, creeps occasionally manage to get in. A little bit of understanding can go a long way with swinging, but there is a line that needs to be drawn when it comes to acceptable behavior. There's the shy person who stares, and then the weird person who stares. There's the person who asks if they can join, and the person who won't take no for an answer. Usually, they get thrown out after a complaint or two, but still...it can ruin the mood for an entire night.
- Not everyone is super hot. Worried about seeing a person shaped like Venus of Willendorf instead of Venus De Milo? It will likely happen at one point or another, but it's nothing that a little bit of memory suppression via vodka cannot cure.
- No protection. Generally speaking, condoms are available in massive quantities at swingers' clubs and sex parties. But, sometimes they do run out.

- You have no place to put your clothing and items safely. Most upscale swinger parties will have a place to put your stuff - either a locker room or a coat check. Don't ask me where you're supposed to keep the keys or tickets.

If you're a single guy, you're SOL in most swinger parties. Sadly, this is just a reality of the scene.
Think about what would happen if swinger parties ended up admitting single men in droves. That's right, it would go from a swing fest to a sausage fest in the first 2 seconds.
- The venue or the entourage is ghetto. This occasionally happens when you're a cash-strapped, sexually curious college student who wants to go to a swinger party. It's highly recommended that you learn more about the swinger club before you attend.

- Sometimes, you're still the youngest couple in the room. This one can be blamed on poor party research on the attendees' part, or poor party promotion - depending on the situation. Either way, this can happen. If you see your mom, just run out of the room screaming, hire a good therapist, and consider becoming a binge drinker for the next ten years.
The good news is that experience in the scene makes many of these problems go away - for both the party attendees and the promoters themselves. So, as younger crowds begin to throw their own swingers' meetups and parties, it's quite possible that much of the issues that people are noticing will end up disappearing.
